“If anything that kills over a million people in the next few decades, it’s more likely to be a highly infectious virus rather than a war”

Five years ago Bill Gates talked to us about this on a platform called TED Talk. He gave us the warning of how ill-prepared we are for an outbreak such as COVID 19.

Currently, I am rewatching this during the pandemic that has now lasted from the beginning of 2020 till now.

It is strangely terrifying how we were warned of this, yet we truly did nothing to prepare for such circumstances. While Bill Gates was talking about how we as countries and governments and the world should develop a better system to tackle humanitarian crises of epidemics, this stands true to a lot of aspects.

We were certainly as citizens not prepared for a pandemic.

This pandemic in many ways has forced us to take care of ourselves and our mental well-being. Being stuck at home in lockdown and isolated was hard on a lot of us. We no longer can visit our friends or our favorite casino Malaysia. Work from home is not as fancy and easy as it sounds. Studying online is not a dream ticket for a better job either. None of us are vacationing anymore. Every day has become a struggle in the pandemic.

However, the good news is, it is not too late to continue preparing ourselves for the pandemic. The pandemic is likely here to stay for a couple more months and it is important to learn ways to cope with the outbreak and the post covid events.

Here are some self-care tips you can implement while this pandemic lingers.

  • Take On New Hobbies And Social Activities

We can longer hang out and party with our friends the way we used to. We miss the comfort of huge gatherings and celebrations. With these on halt or minimized, take this extra freed time to experiment with new hobbies.

Some of us have taken on new projects of the art of writing to cope with the pandemic. While others have turned to exercise or perfecting their pancake recipe. All are valid, and all must be celebrated. Some have even become influencers during this pandemic. Whatever floats our boat and keeps us occupied in a healthy manner, we shall go for it.

  • Staying Connected With Friends And Family

The pandemic not only brought an outbreak of an infectious disease but also an outbreak of mental illnesses. People already diagnosed found themselves in worse situations with overwhelming isolation. It was harder for them to feel and cope. With these dire times ahead, it is important that we set time in our lives to reconnect and get in touch with our friends and family.

With the internet and social media, we can utilize the power of these to ensure we have quality time with our loved ones. Download a game that you and your friends can enjoy or get a mobile application that you can use with your family as well. For example, a lot of us fancied the group video chat app called house party during this pandemic. This was a great choice of app to keep our idle times occupied with our friends and family.

  • Eating well

Invest your time into learning healthy eating habits. Teens and adolescents are at risk of developing body image issues and eating disorders. The lockdown has put a halt on our daily activeness so take this indoor time to enjoy the art of eating healthy. Healthy eating does not have to be boring. Experiment with your friends and family. Figure out what your favorite fruits and vegetables are. Make your plate colorful. Turn to Pinterest for more health inspiration. The options to remain healthy are endless and sometimes even an online appointment with your dietician or a nutritionist could do wonders for your daily life.

Also, a gentle reminder to yourself. It is not necessary to eat healthy all the time. Remember, we are in a pandemic. Not a fitness regime. Give your body the love and food it deserves.

With some of these tips in mind, prep yourself for this long pandemic. While the governments are still trying to curb the virus, we can do our best to remain healthy and fit. Take good care of yourself.
