There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to bridesmaids’ bouquets, which are traditionally posies, or smaller versions of the bride’s bouquet, like in the photo above.

But if you’re after something unique, practical and less cumbersome (because let’s face it, in between all that running around and tending to the bride, looking after a bouquet of flowers is the last thing on a bridesmaid’s mind!), here are a couple of adorable, do-able and unusual ideas:

Sweet straw baskets

Rustic, romantic and the right touch of retro, bridesmaids can be basket cases, too, but in a good way! Fill little straw baskets (you want to look kitsch, not like you’re selling flowers) with an assortment of wildflowers for a bouquet alternative that is easy to carry, and can be set down without squashing your beautiful blooms.

Clutch me close

For a pretty and practical alternative to a bridesmaid bouquet, why not opt for a clutch purse? That way, your bridesmaids can each have their phones on standby (because let’s face it, everyone carries their phones with them at all times), along with other little bits and pieces you may need, like tampons, breath mints, blotting paper and lipstick!

Hold a candle to you

If you’re getting married later in the day, or want your bridesmaids to make a statement entrance in a darkened hall, why not have them carry softly-lit candles in lanterns?

Poised pomanders

If you like the idea of your bridesmaids carrying flowers but want something more unusual, why not pick a pomander? They’re pretty and easily slipped around their wrist or held in their hands. And when they’re done with bridesmaids duties, they can hang their pomanders up as a decorative piece!

Pinwheel pretty

Cheap and cheerful, pinwheels would be a perfect bouquet alternative for the bridal party with a sense of fun. They also turn out great in pictures, as you can see!

Up!

If you’re thinking of the gorgeous Up! inspired wedding photos of bloggers Tim and Audrey and want to incorporate the same elements of whimsy into your special day, why not have your bridesmaids carry bouquets of helium-filled balloons? They’re fun and colourful, and can be given out to the kids in the audience at the end of the night!
